Public Health Insurance

The public healthcare system in Germany ensures that residents have access to high-quality medical services. All residents and expats who work in Germany are required to have public health insurance, commonly referred to as "Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung" (GKV). This system is designed to cover essential healthcare needs and is primarily funded through payroll taxes shared between employers and employees.

Advantages of Public Health Insurance

Comprehensive Coverage

Public health insurance in Germany provides a wide range of medical services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, and preventive care.

Affordability

Contributions to public health insurance are income-based, making it a cost-effective option for most expats. The employer typically covers half of the premium, with the other half deducted from the employee's salary.

Family Coverage

Public health insurance also extends coverage to family members, ensuring that dependents are included in the healthcare system.

Private Health Insurance

While public health insurance is mandatory for most expats, some individuals, such as high-income earners or freelancers, can opt for private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung or PKV). Employees whose income is above the annual income limit can choose between public and private health insurance. The annual income limit is 69.300 euros in 2024. Here too, private health insurance offers various price/benefit alternatives depending on the age of entry, state of health and chosen tariff.

Advantages of Private Health Insurance

Customizable Coverage

Private health insurance plans can be tailored to suit specific medical needs and preferences. This flexibility allows individuals to choose their preferred doctors, hospitals, and additional services.

Shorter Waiting Times

Private health insurance often comes with shorter waiting times for medical appointments and elective procedures, providing quicker access to specialized healthcare services.

Extended Coverage

Private health insurance may cover additional services such as dental care, alternative medicine, and premium hospital accommodations.
